BEEF WIRE: Cattle on Feed, Ogallala Livestock, Nebraska Drought; Record Meat Production
LIVESTOCK COMMENTS: The market remains strong relative to recent years, and it is offering a strong price for most classes of calves and feeder cattle.
CATTLE ON FEED: U.S. inventory reported at 11.279 million head on September 1st, up slightly from last year. This is the second highest September 1 inventory since the series began in 1996. The U.S. inventory has been larger than 11 million head for 58 out of the last 59 months
NATIONAL CATTLE TRACKER: The largest steer and heifer string sold this week was 351 heifers (738#) from Bloomfield, Iowa at $178.00. The second largest string was 309 heifers (683#) from Kingsville, Missouri at $179.50
NATIONAL STEER TRACKER: The largest steer string (700-899#) sold this week was 232 steers (793#) from El Reno, Oklahoma at $184.25. The second largest string was 219 steers (702#) from Ozark, Arkansas at $175.50. The average price for the top 10 steer strings sold this week was $177.38, compared to $175.09, last week
Weekly cattle slaughter reported at 667K head, compared to 667K last week and 643K last year. YTD slaughter at 24.7 million head, up 1.5% from last year (EWMP)
BEEF PRODUCTION: Weekly production reported at 548.9 million pounds, up 0.4% from last week, up 3.1% from last year (EWMP)
